“There’s a lot of old tales, if you know where to find them. Some old buffoons take them quite, quite seriously. Seriously enough to be very careful of talking about them, either from fear of ridicule or from... something worse. But I can trust you, of course. Mad idiot-savants across the ages have predicted the return of ancient evil, of incomprehensible god-beings. Asleep, for now, they say! But as the constellations move inexorably towards a dread alignment, they will begin to stir, and the mental shockwave of their awakening will end us all in some kind of lunatic baptismal self-destruction.
Say for a moment that there is a kernel of truth in these legends. Indulge me, please. I saw many things on the Western Front; the best of man, the worst of man. The question I ask myself about the nightmare situation I described is: will we even make it that far? What if the merest start of these end times is enough to push humanity over the edge? And are the horrors we have seen in this war-blighted century the beginning of our descent?” – Col. Arthur Pickering (Ret’d), Hastings, 17 March 1938
World War Cthulhu is a range of settings and scenarios for the Call of Cthulhu roleplaying game. The core settings will focus on conflicts in the 20th Century, as players struggle against two existential threats – the influence of the Cthulhu Mythos, and humanity’s own darkest aspects. The first core setting is World War 2, the second, Cold War. These are to be followed by the First World War and World War Three.
