The Cubicle 7 team has continued to grow throughout 2021 — with 29 permanent staff and many more freelancers, writers, artists, designers, editors, and support staff all around the world! We shared more on this growth here last week. In our Meet the Team posts we share insights from new team members to give you a peek behind the curtain at just what goes into making our games.
With an incredible wealth of experience and many writing and producing credits to his name, our new Senior Producer, Tim Huckelbery shares some of his insights on working in the industry for many years. Based in the US in Little Canada, Minnesota, just north of St Paul, Tim will be overseeing several game lines, including Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay and Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Wrath & Glory.
I’ve been into fantasy and science fiction from as far back as I can remember — like watching Star Trek as a child when it was on NBC — and have been fortunate to be able to be involved with these genres most of my life. I was heavily involved with the MIT Science Fiction Society and later was an officer in USAF Space Command. There I got to control orbital spacecraft and launch rockets, one to another world. (Insert your favourite rocket science joke here.)
Gaming was a big part of things while I was in the military; as well as regular game sessions, I designed and ran lots of training and certification scenarios (think LARP adventures but with strict rules and cooler uniforms). We regularly played classics like Paranoia and Diplomacy. Things really changed for me when someone brought in Talisman one night, and we discovered Games Workshop (GW). It wasn’t long before I was playing and demoing Warhammer 40,000 and Space Hulk at conventions. I loved this so much that I joined the company.
While at GW, I began freelance writing for its roleplay games, starting with Dark Heresy when GW launched it and then Fantasy Flight Games (FGG) when they took over the line. That led to Rogue Trader, Deathwatch, and Black Crusade, then after I moved to FFG, this branched out to Star Wars Roleplay, The Extraordinary Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Legend of the Five Rings, and Genesys. I’d assumed Dark Heresy 2nd Edition would be my last foray into the grimdark but, as everyone knows, you never really leave it.
Last year I had the opportunity to contribute to Forsaken System Player’s Guide, and now I’m back and involved with WFRP and Warhammer 40,000 Roleplay: Wrath & Glory. I can’t wait to show off the cool things that are coming, and I’m excited to be a part of them.
