‘Wrecker? A wrecker, you say? How, very dare you! I, the noble Sir Answel Bogenwrath? My dear girl, I am no loathsome wrecker, but an honourable pirate! Piracy is a trade like any other — the exchange of one good for something else of equal value. In this case, your money for your life. My business done, I shall leave you on your way, your boat and pride intact. No wrecker can claim thus. Every boat they choose they must first disable, and they have any number of traps, tricks, and vile ploy to achieve that. I have seen boats set ablaze, pierced below the waterline, caught in nets, rigging cut, sails ripped, crew murdered, and all to achieve what a pirate might with but an honest threat.
And should you comply with their demands? Why, most wreckers will still kill you on the spot! Where will Answel Bogenwrath be found tomorrow? On the Nirn, the Reik, or far up the Stir? None may say, for I ply my trade where I please. Wreckers are shorebound, their traps large and difficult to move, so relocating is a tiresome expense, and most would sooner kill you than have you expose a good spot! Speaking of expense, now, that’s a very fine necklace about your lovely neck, my dear…’’
‘Sir’ Answel Bogenwrath, Dread Pirate of the Bogen, ‘Maurice’ or just Morris to his friends.
Wreckers practise their trade up and down the Empire’s waterways, ambushing and grounding boats to seize their cargo. While some are highwaymen or other kinds of opportunistic criminals, who merely turn to the rivers when pickings are scarce; others make it a full-time pursuit. Canny groups hide their traps, taking only the occasional boat, and often one which their spies in nearby docks have marked as bearing valuables. Indeed, some of these spies physically mark the boat in some way, with an errant know, scratch on the hull, or some other subtle sign.
Less discerning groups will barricade a narrow stretch of the water. One particularly bold effort lead by the Wrecker Greta Lachsmann, included the capture of a lock house, and for an entire day every barge that passed was robbed and sank as soon as the lock gates closed on it. This is a dangerous practice indeed, for as soon as word arrives that a stretch of the river has gone quiet, local riverward patrols will descend on the location with as much force as they can muster. Thus was the fate of Greta Lachsmann, who should have saved at least one barge in which to make her escape.
Wreckers are far from the only threat on the river, of course, and far more can be found in the Death on the Reik Companion.
